Mallika Mehta on "Evolve: the story of her"

S!: Hi Mallika, how are you today?
MM: Hey! I’m doing great, thank you.

S!: You have an amazing voice, you’ve been widely compared to Adele in press. Your single “Flame is gone” was even extensively compared to Adele’s “Someone like you” by music critic Alex Faulkner. What’s your opinion on this comparison?
MM: Adele has been my idol from the time I heard her songs and to be compared to her puts me on cloud9. But it’s not just that, it also brings so much responsibility. For “Flame is Gone” to be compared to one of Adele’s finest and toughest songs “Someone Like You” is a feeling I still can’t express. It’s a combination of shock, butterflies and truckloads of happiness.

S!: Has singing always been your passion? When did you realise you have a true talent for it?
MM: Music has always and will always be my first love. Singing is something I’ve been doing since I was really little, about since I was 5 years of age. I’ve been extremely passionate about music, not just singing or playing but also listening to it. I think I was in school about in the 7th grade when I first sang the song “Waka Waka” by Shakira for a school competition and I won. Everyone who heard it came to congratulate me even before the results were announced and seeing people appreciate my singing, I realised it was to be something more than just a hobby.

S!: You’ve recently sorted the album called “Evolve”. It is a story of one-sided love and getting over it. Tell us more about your experience.
MM: “Evolve : The Story of Her”, just as the tag line suggests is the story of a girl next door, the story of a girl in love. My EP is a story unplanned but carefully falling in line to highlight the multitude of phases a girl faces when in love. She may end up with the one she loves or tables may turn, what matters is how she emerges victorious.

S!: What is your routine for warning up your voice? How often do you exercise in singing and what do you usually do?
MM: Usually before a gig, interview or concert I tend to run through the main parts of the songs that I am going to be singing. That itself turns into my warmup. I don’t do my singing exercises every day but I definitely try to do it as much as I can. I don’t follow any fixed pattern or routine. I usually end up practicing a few times a week but when I do, I do it for a few hours at a stretch. I generally just sing a lot of songs repeatedly as practice.
